Humanoid robot reaches summit of Ecuador’s Chimborazo in high-altitude test
A humanoid robot has reached the summit of Chimborazo in Ecuador, marking a milestone in high-altitude robotics testing.
A humanoid robot named Pemba has successfully reached the summit of Ecuador’s Chimborazo volcano, becoming the first of its kind to climb above 6,000 metres. The 1.32-metre-tall robot, based on a modified Unitree G1 model, was tested in extreme conditions including freezing temperatures and low oxygen levels. Footage shows it navigating volcanic terrain alongside an expedition team, walking independently on moderate slopes but requiring assistance on steeper sections.
Developers said the climb was designed to test the robot’s balance, mobility and communication systems in challenging environments. While it was not able to complete the entire ascent on its own, the team described the mission as a key step towards more ambitious goals, including future climbs on Mount Everest and potential applications in space exploration. The project could also support the use of humanoid robots in rescue operations, scientific research and environmental monitoring in remote areas.
