Indonesia condemns Israel's 'inhumane actions' against Gaza aid flotilla activists
Indonesia has condemned what it described as the “inhumane” treatment of activists detained by Israeli forces after the interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters.
Speaking in Jakarta on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Wewengkang said Israel’s actions violated international law.
“Israel’s military action against the GSF fleet and the volunteers within it is a clear violation of international law,” she said during a press conference.
The Indonesian Foreign Ministry later confirmed that all nine Indonesian citizens detained during the operation had been released.
“The protection of Indonesian citizens is our top priority,” Wewengkang said, adding that Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi had been in contact with Turkey, Jordan and other countries whose citizens participated in the mission.
The Global Sumud Flotilla was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza amid severe shortages caused by the ongoing blockade.
Videos showing activists kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs sparked international criticism, with several countries summoning Israeli ambassadors in protest.
Israel said its naval forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters earlier this week, detaining 428 participants from dozens of countries. Israeli authorities defended the blockade as lawful and denied wrongdoing.
Officials later confirmed that all remaining foreign activists had been released and transferred to deportation flights to Turkey.
