Senegal turns to central banker as new prime minister after Sonko’s dismissal
Senegal on Monday, May 25, appointed former Central Bank official Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo as the country’s new prime minister, days after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed Ousmane Sonko from the post.
The appointment was announced by government spokesperson Oumar Samba Ba during a televised address from the Presidential Palace in Dakar.
“Mr Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo is appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Senegal,” Ba declared, praising Lo’s “competence, his in-depth knowledge of the country, his experience of the intricacies of the economy, his commitment, and above all — his loyalty.”
Lo previously served as Secretary-General of the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), bringing extensive financial and administrative experience to the role at a time when Senegal is pursuing major economic reforms.
In his first remarks after taking office, Lo promised a “change in approach” aimed at remaining faithful to the commitments of President Faye’s administration.
