Spanish dominates South America, but its linguistic map tells a richer story

Across South America, it’s the colour orange on the language map that stands out most. Spanish is the official language in most countries of the continent, with green marking the territory of Portuguese, namely Brazil.

From Argentina to Venezuela, Spanish is the dominant official language. Brazil remains the notable exception, with Portuguese as its sole official language.

Meanwhile, in smaller countries such as Guyana and Suriname, English and Dutch hold official status respectively, underscoring the continent’s diverse colonial history.

Yet colonial languages are just part of the story. Indigenous languages like Quechua, Aymara and Guaraní continue to be co-official in countries including Bolivia and Peru, reflecting efforts to preserve cultural identity.

For instance, recent trade negotiations between the EU and the Mercosur countries involve Brazil and other Spanish-speaking nations of South America; language alignment helps shape legal texts, translations and public information campaigns.

Meanwhile, the rise of digital services, e-commerce and social media across Latin America means that Spanish-language content is increasingly dominant, but Portuguese still drives Brazil’s market of over 200 million consumers. Recognising this split is key for businesses, communicators and policymakers operating in the region.
