Uruguay becomes first Mercosur nation to ratify EU trade deal: Video
Uruguay’s Parliament has ratified the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, becoming the first member of the South American bloc to complete the legislative process after more than 25 years of negotiations.
The Chamber of Deputies approved the bill by 91 votes to two, following unanimous backing in the Senate, with broad cross-party support and opposition limited to a small group from the Identidad Soberana party. During the debate, lawmaker Sebastián Valdomir stressed the importance of multilateral agreements in what he described as an increasingly unilateral global trade environment, referring to United States tariff policies, and argued that agreeing on common rules and quotas contrasts with prevailing geopolitical trends.
