What to know about the eight-year prison sentence of Tunisian anti-racism activist Saadia Mosbah: summary

What we know
- A Tunisian court sentenced human rights activist Saadia Mosbah to eight years in prison and fined her £26,000 ($35,000) on March 19.
- Mosbah, founder of the anti-racism group Mnèmty, was charged with money laundering and illicit enrichment.
- She has been in detention since May 2024.
- Her son was sentenced to three years in prison, while another activist received a two-year sentence.
- Mosbah is known for advocating for sub-Saharan migrants in Tunisia, particularly after President Kais Saied’s 2023 speech describing migrants as a demographic threat.
- The case comes amid broader concerns about the erosion of rights and freedoms since Saied dissolved parliament in 2021.
- In 2024, authorities suspended several civil society organisations, including the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights and the Association of Democratic Women, citing financial audits linked to foreign funding.
- Rights groups say Tunisia has intensified security measures and deportations as migration flows increase, raising concerns about restrictions on humanitarian work and advocacy.
What they said
Mosbah’s lawyer, Hela Ben Salem, told Reuters, “The verdict is a major shock, and it is part of a broader effort to dismantle civil society groups and shift responsibility for the state's failure to address the migrant issue onto these groups.” She also described the ruling as “a shocking judgment that has nothing to do with the case” and said it sends “a clear message: community work is suspect in the eyes of the current regime.” The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and the World Organisation Against Torture said her prosecution is “part of a broader pattern of intensifying repression of civil society in Tunisia,” citing cases against rights defenders, media “smear campaigns” and restrictions on NGOs working on migration.
