$8 billion for Ukraine — but will it actually help Kyiv?

The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday, June 4, passed the Ukraine Support Act in a 226-195 vote, authorizing $8 billion in military financing loans for Ukraine and NATO allies while extending sanctions against Russia.

The legislation, aimed at reinforcing Western support for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia, drew opposition from some Republican lawmakers who argued that portions of the bill were outdated and disconnected from current geopolitical realities.

Among the critics was Republican Representative Randy Fine, who said the measure appeared to have been "copied and pasted" from previous sanctions legislation targeting Iran and would do little to help Ukraine.

"This bill is not about helping Ukraine. This is not about standing up to Vladimir Putin. This is about engaging in Trump derangement syndrome," Fine said during debate on the House floor.
