Colombia’s president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella has given armed groups less than a week to surrender, vowing to abandon peace talks in favour of a strict law-and-order approach.
In a stark message before taking office on 7 August, de la Espriella said there would be “no sham peace processes” and warned that those who refuse to lay down their arms will face the full force of the state. He pledged to restore authority through the security forces, signalling a major shift in Colombia’s approach to internal conflict.
