African Union praises Russia’s support at UN Security Council

The African Union has expressed appreciation for Russia’s support on African issues at the United Nations.

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has praised Russia for its support on African matters at the UN Security Council, particularly in advancing Resolution 2719, which aims to secure funding for African peace and security missions. He said the resolution would help ensure more stable and predictable financing through contributions from UN member states.

Youssouf also highlighted Russia’s backing for reforms to the UN Security Council, including support for Africa’s long-standing demand for greater representation. The African Union is calling for two permanent seats with full rights, as well as five non-permanent seats, as part of efforts to strengthen the continent’s voice in global decision-making.
