Five of the world's biggest technology companies could spend more than $1 trillion a year by 2027 as they race to build artificial intelligence infrastructure, marking a sharp increase in investment in data centres, computing equipment and cloud services.

Main points

  • Five technology giants could spend $1.12 trillion in 2027.
  • Google and Microsoft are projected to lead spending.
  • Rising AI infrastructure costs are putting pressure on profits.

Five of the world's biggest technology companies could spend more than $1 trillion a year by 2027 as they race to build artificial intelligence infrastructure, marking a sharp increase in investment in data centres, computing equipment and cloud services.

Amazon, Google parent Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle are projected to spend a combined $1.12 trillion in 2027, according to Morgan Stanley Research estimates published by Investing.com in May 2026.

The infographic above, based on those estimates, shows their combined capital expenditure rising from $261 billion in 2024 to more than four times that amount in just three years.

Google and Microsoft lead spending projections

Alphabet is projected to spend $299 billion in 2027, followed by Microsoft at $276 billion and Amazon at $268 billion.

Meta's spending could reach $165 billion, while Oracle is expected to spend $108 billion.

The figures represent capital expenditure, which includes investment in data centres, servers, computer chips and other long-term infrastructure rather than everyday operating costs.

The surge reflects growing demand for the computing power needed to develop and operate AI systems, including chatbots, business software and cloud-based services.

AI investment continues to accelerate

Morgan Stanley has since raised its broader spending forecasts as technology companies expand their AI plans.

In August, the bank said consensus estimates for cloud capital expenditure in 2027 had reached approximately $1.2 trillion, around $170 billion higher than estimates made before second-quarter earnings.

The increase reflects demand for AI computing capacity that continues to exceed available supply, prompting major cloud providers to expand their infrastructure plans.

Spending raises questions about returns

The scale of investment is also creating financial pressure.

A Reuters analysis published in July found that the five technology companies could spend more on capital expenditure than they generate in free cash flow by 2027.

Although AI services are generating growing revenue, companies face rising costs for chips, electricity, cooling systems and data centre construction.

Investors are increasingly watching whether the spending will produce enough additional revenue and profit to justify the investment.

For now, the forecasts point to a major shift in the technology industry, with companies committing unprecedented sums to the physical infrastructure needed to power artificial intelligence.
