Brazil's top court moves to fight fake news
Brazil’s Supreme Court has signed an agreement with major social media platforms to tackle internet disinformation in the country.
The agreement will ensure that illegal practices that undermine public confidence in the Court will be fought in line with the Supreme Court’s Program to Combat Disinformation.
Social media platforms including YouTube, Google, Microsoft, Kwai, TikTok and Met were engaged as part of the agreement.
These platforms committed to promoting education and awareness campaigns about the negative impacts of disinformation.
President of the court, Justice Luis Roberto Barroso emphasised the need to combat fake news, hate speech and attacks on democracy, while protecting the rights of citizens to exercise their freedom of expression.

“We cannot allow a society to develop under the guise of freedom of expression where no one can trust what they see. This is the effort that unites the Federal Supreme Court and digital platforms,” Barroso stated. “This is an administrative partnership, focused on media education. It has no connection to any case before the Supreme Court and carries no jurisdictional implications,” he was quoted by Agencia Brasil.
Launched in 2021, the Supreme Court’s Program to Combat Disinformation will also address unlawful practices that seek to distort its decisions.
