China has criticised the European Union over plans that could restrict Chinese telecommunications firms from participating in Europe’s 5G networks, describing the proposal as discriminatory and driven by political considerations.

The reaction followed an EU announcement earlier this week outlining measures to gradually remove equipment supplied by countries it considers “high risk” to the security of critical infrastructure. The proposal would affect major Chinese technology groups, including Huawei and ZTE.
