Democrats expand 2026 senate battlefield, Republican-held seats come under pressure

Republicans hold a 53–47 Senate majority, leaving Democrats needing a net gain of four seats to take control, provided they retain all the seats they currently hold.

An Aug8 polling tracker shows particularly close contests in Alaska, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio and Texas, while Democrats hold stronger polling positions in Georgia, Minnesota and North Carolina.

In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola and Republican Senator Dan Sullivan are nearly tied at 46.5% and 46.2%, respectively, according to the tracker. Nebraska is also close, with independent Dan Osborn at 45.6% against Republican Senator Pete Ricketts at 44.5%.

Republicans hold narrow polling advantages in Michigan and Iowa, while Republican Senator Jon Husted and Democrat Sherrod Brown are separated by less than one percentage point in Ohio.

Democrats lead the displayed matchups in Georgia, North Carolina and Minnesota. Texas has also emerged as a competitive contest, with Democrat James Talarico narrowly ahead of Republican Ken Paxton in the tracker.

The tracker rates seven Senate contests as toss-ups, although independent election forecasters differ over which races fall into that category.

The regular 2026 Senate cycle covers 33 Class II seats, with additional special elections increasing the number of contests on the ballot.

With Democrats needing four Republican-held seats while protecting their own vulnerable races, a widening group of states could determine which party controls the Senate after November.
