Annual ‘Jagua Patriota’ event brings together pet owners and animal lovers during 215th independence celebrations
Pet owners and animal lovers gathered in Asuncion on Thursday as more than 50 dogs took part in a patriotic parade marking the 215th anniversary of Paraguay’s independence.
The event, known as ‘Jagua Patriota’, featured dogs dressed in the colours of Paraguay’s national flag and outfits inspired by independence figures. The parade has been held for the past 10 years and has become part of the country’s annual independence celebrations.
Participants described the event as both festive and emotional, with many visitors sharing personal stories about their pets.
“It's something very beautiful because we all share love for pets. I already met several people who tell me that [my dog] is just like their dog, who even passed away, and they cry there with him, and we share the same passion, right? And I find it very beautiful because we all share the same love for animals,” said participant Ana Gonzalez.
Another attendee spoke about the connection people have with their animals.
“They are four-legged angels. [...] They mean so much to us, and sometimes we think they are the ones who don't need us, but I believe we are the ones who need them,” the attendee said.
During the parade, dogs competed in categories including best patriotic outfit, best pet-owner duo, the most charming and the most talented.
The patriotic dog parade formed part of wider independence events taking place across Asuncion, including military aircraft flyovers, a laurel offering at the Pantheon of Heroes and the Independence Festival held in front of the Cabildo.
