Ethiopia campaign calls for stronger action on violence against women
A social media campaign in Ethiopia is calling for violence against women and girls to be declared a national crisis and for stronger action from authorities.
The #ትሰማ campaign, meaning “let her voice be heard”, is drawing attention to cases of violence against women and girls and concerns over what campaigners describe as weak punishments and the release of perpetrators. The campaign is also backed by a petition calling for greater accountability, which had passed 17,500 verified signatures.
The initiative follows similar social media campaigns in South Africa, where thousands of people changed their profile pictures to purple to raise awareness of gender-based violence and femicide.
