Hungary expels 10 Russian diplomats over alleged improper activities
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced on Tuesday that his government was expelling 10 Russian diplomats over activities authorities said were incompatible with their diplomatic status.
Speaking before the National Assembly in Budapest, Magyar said he had instructed the Foreign Ministry to inform Russia's ambassador that the 10 embassy employees had engaged in activities deemed unacceptable under the Vienna Convention.
Magyar stressed that the expulsions would not mean an end to diplomatic relations with Moscow. "Hungary still intends to maintain the necessary dialogue and mutual respect while adhering to the rules," he said, adding that his government would defend the country's sovereignty and independence.
Foreign Minister Anita Orban also said the diplomats had engaged in activities considered unacceptable under the Vienna Convention. Neither she nor Magyar provided details of the allegations against them.
Russia condemned the decision, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warning that Moscow's response "will be harsh and painful." She blamed what she described as a "Russophobic lobby in Budapest" for the expulsions.
