Jair Bolsonaro: The legal troubles being faced by former Brazilian president

In the aftermath of his narrow loss in last year's presidential election to leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is facing a growing legal mess.
The various legal challenges have intensified since his electoral defeat, ultimately barring him from upcoming elections and even raising the danger of jail time.
Electoral court decision
The Brazilian federal electoral court (TSE) issued a significant ruling in June, effectively barring Bolsonaro from holding public office until 2030. This decision came in response to his conduct during last year's election. Five out of seven justices voted to convict him of abuse of power and misuse of the media. In July 2022, Bolsonaro summoned ambassadors to make unfounded claims of vulnerabilities in Brazil's electronic voting system. This verdict has put a major dent in his political aspirations. Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied breaking any laws and has framed the allegations as a witch hunt by his political opponents.
Congressional Probe
A congressional probe that has been investigating the January 8 insurrection by Bolsonaro's supporters recently made recommendations. These recommendations included charging Bolsonaro and several of his allies with criminal association, political violence, disrupting the democratic order, and an attempted coup d'état. It's important to note that this congressional inquiry does not possess the power to directly punish Bolsonaro or others. However, it can issue recommendations for them to face criminal or civil charges.
Supreme Court Investigations
Bolsonaro is still under investigation by the Brazilian Supreme Court in at least five separate criminal investigations. These investigations encompass a wide range of allegations, including the spreading of fake news about COVID-19 vaccines, leaking details from a sealed federal police probe, interference in the federal police, propagation of online misinformation, and his alleged role in masterminding the January 8 riots in the capital.
The aide turned state witness
Adding to Bolsonaro's legal woes, he and his former aides are currently under investigation by the federal police for allegedly forging his vaccination records to facilitate travel to the United States. In a related development, former aide Mauro Cid was arrested by the police for his suspected involvement in this scheme. Notably, Cid was also a central figure in another alleged racket, where Bolsonaro and his team are suspected of selling expensive jewels given to his administration by the Saudi government. However, in a significant turn of events, Cid, after months in jail, agreed to cooperate with the federal police and was subsequently released.
Reports of Armed Forces involvement
In a development that raises questions about Bolsonaro's intentions, it was reported by the Brazilian media in September that Cid allegedly told the police that Bolsonaro had sounded out commanders of the armed forces about a draft decree to overturn the election. This revelation adds another layer of complexity to the legal challenges faced by the former Brazilian president.
