Java is the world's most populous island, packing more than 150 million people into a land area that makes up only a small fraction of Indonesia.

Key Points

  • Java has roughly 157 million people
  • More than half of Indonesians live on Java
  • Java has more people than most countries

Java is the world's most populous island, packing more than 150 million people into a land area that makes up only a small fraction of Indonesia.

Indonesia's 2020 census counted 151.6 million people on Java, equal to 56.1% of the country's population, even though the island accounts for only about 7% of Indonesia's territory.

More recent estimates put Java's population at roughly 157 million in 2024, making the graphic's figure of 156.4 million broadly reasonable, depending on the year and whether nearby islands such as Madura are included.

That population would make Java larger than the vast majority of the world's countries. Only a small group, including India, China, the United States, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria and Brazil, have national populations clearly above Java's current level. UN estimates put India at about 1.44 billion people in 2024, while Indonesia had about 282 million.

The concentration is particularly striking because Java is only about 132,600 square kilometres in area. The island includes Jakarta as well as major cities such as Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang and Yogyakarta.

Java's dominance within Indonesia has slowly declined. Its share of the country's population fell from 59.1% in 2000 to 57.5% in 2010 and 56.1% in 2020, according to Indonesian government figures, as population growth and migration increased the share living on other islands.

The map's main message is therefore accurate, although the exact comparison changes as populations grow or shrink. Java remains the most populous island on Earth, with more residents than most entire countries.
