Namibia to offer free university education from 2026

Namibia’s new President, Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has announced that university education will be free from 2026.
In line with this, the government will pay for all registration and tuition fees at public universities and vocational centres across the country.
Speaking during her first State of the Nation Address, President Nandi-Ndaitwah said the goal is to help young people get better education and skills so they can find good jobs and grow the economy.
“From the next academic year, commencing 2026, tertiary education will become 100% subsidised by the government,” she was quoted by Xinhua.
The president also shared plans to support youth businesses with a N$257 million fund.
Namibia faces a big challenge with youth unemployment, which is nearly 45%.
The government also plans to start a new internship and apprenticeship programme this year to help young people gain work experience.
Other promises made include building 10,000 affordable houses every year to help people living in poor areas.
The president also said Namibia will start talks about building a nuclear power plant to support the country’s growing energy needs.
