Russia can play key role in Africa’s development, says Angola envoy
Angola’s ambassador to Russia, Augusto da Silva Cunha, has said Moscow is well positioned to play a significant role in Africa’s economic development through its involvement in BRICS and the broader Global South.
Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Wednesday, the ambassador highlighted the growing economic influence of BRICS countries and their importance to developing nations.
“BRICS represents a significant proportion of the Global South countries, and the Global South accounts for around 45 per cent of the world’s population,” da Silva Cunha said.
He argued that the economic weight of BRICS now exceeds that of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialised nations.
“As a member of BRICS, Russia will be able to play a key role in Africa’s economic development,” he added.
The remarks came during the 29th edition of SPIEF, which is being held from June 3 to 6 in St Petersburg.
Organisers expect more than 20,000 participants from around 76 countries to attend the forum, including political leaders, business executives and policymakers.
For the first time in several years, representatives from the United States have also accepted an invitation to attend the event.
Established in 1997, SPIEF has become one of Russia’s flagship international economic gatherings and a platform for discussions on global trade, investment and development. Russian President Vladimir Putin has participated regularly since 2005.
