Turkish flag burned during torchlight procession marking 111 years since Armenian Genocide

Thousands of Armenians participated in a torchlight procession in Yerevan on Thursday night to mark the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide during World War I, a term that is disputed by Turkey.

Footage from the event shows crowds walking from Republic Square to the Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex. Participants carried a large Armenian flag and held lit torches and candles. Some individuals were also seen burning the Turkish flag during the procession.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reportedly condemned the flag-burning, describing it as “provocative and tension-inducing behaviour.”

April 24 has been declared by the European Parliament as the “Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Armenian Massacres in the Ottoman Empire.”

The events of 1915–1916, which involved the deportation of hundreds of thousands of Armenians, remain a subject of dispute. Turkey maintains that the events cannot be described as a “genocide” and estimates that around 300,000 people were killed. Armenian sources often place the death toll at about 1.5 million.
