We can't 'build a wall' around Ceuta and throw migrants over it - Sanchez blasts EU
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez criticised the European Union on Thursday for what he described as insufficient support during the Ceuta migrant crisis, saying Europe had failed to show the solidarity Spain expected.
Speaking before Congress, Sanchez also blamed disinformation for worsening the situation, citing false claims that the border was open and that migrants arriving by sea could not be returned. He said intelligence services had found no evidence linking the mass crossing to Morocco, Russia or Israel, although investigations were continuing.
Sanchez said organised crime groups had exploited the crisis and accused some foreign-linked information networks and far-right figures of amplifying fear and distrust.
He reaffirmed that Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish cities and called for stronger cooperation with Morocco, while arguing that migration could not be solved by border controls alone.
The government has approved a €309 million emergency package for Ceuta after around 72,000 people crossed from Morocco on July 30 and 31.
