What went down during Rubio's visit to India
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio received a notably subdued reception during his recent visit to India, sparking online discussion over what many viewed as an unusually muted diplomatic welcome for one of the most prominent figures in the Trump administration.
Videos online showed Rubio arriving in India without any visible high-ranking Indian officials present to receive him at the airport, a departure from the ceremonial welcomes often accorded to senior foreign dignitaries.
The understated reception quickly fuelled speculation on social media, with some users suggesting New Delhi was intentionally signalling displeasure amid growing strains in India-US relations over trade disputes, tariffs and Washington’s criticism of India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian oil.
Despite the optics, Rubio’s trip still yielded substantive diplomatic engagements. He later met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held discussions with senior Indian officials on trade, regional security and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
This visit appeared to be aimed at stabilising ties after months of friction between the two countries under President Donald Trump’s “America First” trade policies.
While no major breakthrough was announced, both sides signalled their intention to maintain strategic cooperation, particularly on supply chains, defence and regional security, even as underlying disagreements continue to test the relationship.
