Brazil’s right-wing protesters rally against Moraes in São Paulo
Thousands of right-wing supporters gathered on São Paulo’s Paulista Avenue on Independence Day, protesting Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and backing Justice André Mendonça.
The rally, attended by around 28,500 people according to a USP/Cebrap estimate, was organised around opposition to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and criticism of Moraes, who played a central role in the case against former President Jair Bolsonaro. Supporters also rallied behind Mendonça, who was appointed to the Supreme Court by Jair Bolsonaro and has recently come into the spotlight amid a growing dispute involving Moraes and the Banco Master investigation.
The demonstration also served as a campaign platform for Flávio Bolsonaro, who is running for president in the October election. Speaking to supporters, he promised to reform the Supreme Court and said he would appoint five new justices if elected, while declaring that Moraes would lose his position. The rally came as Flávio and Lula remain closely matched in recent polling, highlighting the growing political importance of the dispute surrounding Brazil’s Supreme Court.
