Shanghai-born model Ying Zi says age should never stop people from pursuing their dreams as she continues to build a huge online following
At 74, Shanghai-born model Ying Zi has become one of China's best-known senior fashion influencers, using social media and the runway to challenge perceptions of ageing and inspire others to follow their dreams.
Known online as "Tian Lai" (Sweetness is coming), Ying Zi has built a large audience through fashion campaigns, livestreams and catwalk appearances as part of China's growing "Fashion Grandma" movement.
"My name is Ying Zi. I am 74 years old this year. I am from Shanghai. I am one of the members of the Fashion Grandma Group," she said.
"I have over 2 million followers and 600 million views. Online, everyone calls me 'Tian Lai' (Sweetness is coming)."
Ying Zi said her love for fashion began when she was young after her parents encouraged her to learn dance, singing, poise and etiquette.
Those early lessons helped shape the confidence and personal style she is known for today.
"I began to know how to dress myself up. Every single day, I would dress myself up beautifully before going out," she said.
"Everyone would think I looked good and praised me. The more they praised me, the more enthusiastic I became."
Now one of China's most recognisable senior models, Ying Zi hopes her journey encourages older people to embrace new opportunities rather than allow age to define them.
"Age is really not a problem. It truly isn't a problem," she said.
"As long as you step out... surprises will wait for you one by one. Whatever dreams you had in your childhood... they can come true."
China's community of senior fashion influencers has grown rapidly in recent years, with older models using runway shows, commercial campaigns and social media platforms to challenge traditional views of ageing and promote confidence later in life.
