El-Sisi honours Egypt team after historic World Cup run
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed the country's national football team and coaching staff in New Alamein City on Saturday, praising their historic run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Footage showed El-Sisi greeting the players before congratulating them on becoming the first Egyptian team to reach the round of 16 stage of a World Cup.
"You made us proud, truly proud. We cherish you and everything you have accomplished," El-Sisi said.
"You brought joy to everyone's hearts because your performance was characterised by competitiveness, competence, merit, and above all, high values," he added.
El-Sisi also said Egypt's population of 120 million should be capable of producing many more football stars like Mohamed Salah and the current national team.
Egypt's campaign ended with a 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 on July 7, marking the country's best-ever World Cup performance in its fourth appearance at the tournament.
