Madhya Pradesh's quest for a spot in India’s premier cricket extravaganza

India is a nation with an insatiable passion for cricket, and the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a testament to this fervour.
The IPL, a cricketing extravaganza, boasts an estimated brand value of a staggering $8.4 billion. However, one state in India, Madhya Pradesh, remains absent from this cricketing spectacle. In a political twist ahead of the upcoming regional elections, the opposition Congress party is making a promise that has caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts and voters alike.
Congress' bold pledge
In its recent election manifesto unveiled on October 17, the Congress party has made a striking commitment to the people of Madhya Pradesh. They have promised to champion the cause of bringing an IPL franchise to this central state of India, provided they succeed in unseating the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A battleground for change
Madhya Pradesh, often referred to as the "Heart of India," is one of the five states scheduled to elect new legislatures in the coming month. These regional elections are a significant precursor to the general elections anticipated in May 2024. The BJP, along with Modi, is set to seek a third consecutive term in office, intensifying the political battleground.
IPL: India's cricketing extravaganza
The Indian Premier League, which commenced its inaugural edition in 2008, has transformed into one of the world's wealthiest cricket leagues. It consistently attracts top-notch players and coaches to India. The IPL currently features ten teams from across the country, but, notably, none of them hail from Madhya Pradesh, which is one of India's most populous states, with over 72 million people.
Challenges to Madhya Pradesh's IPL aspiration
While the dream of Madhya Pradesh joining the IPL has captured the imagination of many, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which governs the IPL, has not indicated immediate plans for expansion. The BCCI has deep-rooted associations with the BJP, as exemplified by its leadership. Jay Shah, the son of the federal interior minister Amit Shah, serves as the head of the BCCI. Additionally, the IPL Chairman, Arun Singh Dhumal, is the brother of India's sports minister, Anurag Thakur.
IPL's recent expansion
The IPL did expand its horizons in 2022, welcoming two new franchises from Lucknow and Ahmedabad. The successful entrants paid a combined 127.15 billion rupees (equivalent to $1.53 billion) for their place in this lucrative league.
