Malaria surge in Sudan’s Khartoum as millions return home
Malaria cases are surging in Khartoum as millions of people return to Sudan’s war-damaged capital, putting further pressure on an already weakened health system.
At Omdurman Teaching Hospital, malaria patients are filling almost half of the emergency department’s beds, according to Dr Abeer, who said more than nine of the hospital’s 20 emergency beds were occupied by patients with the disease. Some cases can develop serious complications or prove difficult to treat, with patients sometimes remaining ill for up to two weeks.
Federal health officials have called for urgent mosquito-control measures across Khartoum State, where more than 2.2 million people had returned by the end of June after the army recaptured the capital from the Rapid Support Forces. The influx comes as Sudan’s health system remains severely damaged by the conflict, with the World Health Organisation reporting that 37 per cent of health facilities across the country are still non-functional.
