Palestinians return to rubble in Hebron after 11-day Israeli operation

Palestinian residents returned to damaged homes and debris-filled streets in Hebron on Monday, November 2, after Israeli forces withdrew from several neighbourhoods following an 11-day military operation that displaced thousands.

Footage shows residents gathering near a partially destroyed building as emergency teams inspect the damage before allowing families to enter. More than 3,300 people were displaced or otherwise affected, according to local authorities, while 15 homes and other structures were demolished. Resident Fahd Ahmaro described the experience of being forced to leave his home as unbearable.

Israeli forces launched the operation after two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three others at a military checkpoint near Hebron on 23 October. The Israeli military said the operation aimed to thwart terrorism in the city, while Palestinian media reported that troops withdrew from several neighbourhoods on Monday, allowing residents to begin returning.
