Senegalese protest rising cost of living in Dakar
Residents took to the streets of Dakar to protest Senegal's rising cost of living, saying soaring prices for food, rent and electricity were increasingly straining household budgets.
Demonstrators carried placards calling for lower rents and relief from electricity costs, including complaints about Woyofal, Senegal's prepaid power system.
"Senegal has simply become too expensive. There is rent, electricity and even food - everything is expensive," march co-organiser Bathie Drizzy said.
Residents said rising food prices were making even everyday Senegalese meals increasingly difficult to afford, while others called for stronger government regulation of prices in shops and markets.
The protest was held near the national electricity company, Senelec and formed part of the citizen-led "30 Days for Fair Prices" campaign, which encourages consumers to report excessive prices and pressure authorities to act.
