South Africa unrest forces migrants to flee

Thousands of foreign nationals have been relocated to a temporary repatriation centre near Musina, close to South Africa’s border with Zimbabwe, following a wave of anti-migrant protests across the country. Footage shows families living in large tents at the Proefplaas Farm site, where men, women and children are housed separately while awaiting transport home. Many have described difficult conditions, with overcrowding and dust raising concerns about health and sanitation.

Aid organisations say the steady arrival of people is placing the camp under increasing pressure, with fears of disease outbreaks as some wait days for onward travel. Relief groups are providing food, water and essential supplies, while authorities prepare for continued inflows. The situation follows recent demonstrations targeting undocumented migrants, amid a broader pattern of xenophobic tensions in South Africa, prompting neighbouring countries to organise repatriation efforts for their citizens.
