Stoic honour guard steals spotlight as Trump lands in Beijing
US President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to an elaborate state welcome that quickly drew attention online, particularly for a Chinese honour guard member who stood motionless beside Air Force One even as the aircraft’s engines roared behind him.
The tightly choreographed arrival underscored Beijing’s effort to project stability and warmth as Trump began a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid tensions over trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Trump was welcomed at Beijing Capital International Airport by Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng alongside senior Chinese and American officials. Rows of performers waving Chinese and American flags lined the tarmac, while a military band and honour guard took part in the ceremony.
The US president arrived with a delegation that included his son Eric Trump and several high-profile American business leaders, among them Tesla chief executive Elon Musk and Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang.
Their presence highlighted the economic and technological stakes surrounding the visit, particularly as Washington and Beijing continue to navigate disputes over advanced semiconductor exports and market access.
Trump is expected to meet Xi over the next two days, with discussions likely to focus on trade, artificial intelligence cooperation, arms sales to Taiwan and the broader geopolitical fallout from the Iran conflict.
The visit marks Trump’s first trip to China since 2017 and comes as both sides seek to stabilise relations after years of rivalry.
