Thailand to resolve border dispute with Cambodia through peace

The Thai government has announced its intention to resolve a border dispute with Cambodia through peaceful and bilateral means as it remains committed to defending national sovereignty, the Bangkok Post reports.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the government emphasised its position: “The Thai force had to defend itself and the area of Thai sovereignty. The action complied with the principles of international law.”

The announcement referred to the May 28 skirmish between Thai and Cambodian troops in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani province.

Following the incident, both governments engaged in discussions at multiple levels, including between prime ministers. They agreed to cooperate in restoring normalcy and use established bilateral mechanisms, notably the Joint Boundary Committee, which is scheduled to meet in Cambodia on June 14.

The government concluded by stating that the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border is stable and expressed confidence that both countries can reach a mutual resolution.
