Trump unveils 'Freedom Haulers' plan to replace 'illegal alien' truckers with military drivers

US President Donald Trump on Thursday launched the "Freedom Haulers" initiative, a programme aimed at replacing migrant truck drivers with military veterans.

Speaking in Washington, DC, Trump said veterans with experience driving heavy military vehicles would automatically qualify for a commercial driver's licence and be allowed to skip road tests.

Trump said the initiative would help remove what he described as unqualified migrant drivers from US highways, claiming they had been involved in reckless driving that caused preventable deaths.

He also said more than 24,000 driver's licences issued to non-English speakers had been revoked, while over 28,000 licences issued to what he described as "illegal aliens" had been cancelled.

According to the White House, the programme will be jointly run by the Departments of Transportation, Veterans Affairs, Labour and War.
