US commands global data centre market as AI boom fuels infrastructure surge

The United States has by far the world's largest concentration of data centres, accounting for roughly two-fifths of facilities tracked globally as demand for computing infrastructure accelerates alongside artificial intelligence and cloud services.

A July 2026 compilation based on Data Centre Map and GBC Engineers data puts the United States at 4,724 active data centres, or about 39% of an estimated 12,192 facilities worldwide.

The figures are broadly consistent with Data Centre Map's continuously updated database, although exact totals change as facilities are added or reclassified. Data Centre Map currently tracks more than 12,000 facilities across 179 countries.

The gap between the United States and other countries is substantial. The July compilation places the United Kingdom second with 567 data centres, followed by Germany with 533 and France with 392.

China ranks fifth with 376, followed by India with 304, Australia with 294 and Canada with 292.

Italy has 262 facilities, Japan 261, Brazil 218, Spain 217, Indonesia 204, the Netherlands 193 and Russia 188, according to the graphic.

Data Centre Map's live database shows similar figures for most of those markets, including 532 facilities in Germany, 392 in France, 303 in India, 294 in Australia, 261 in Japan, 218 in Brazil and 193 in the Netherlands.

AI Boom Drives US Expansion

The American lead is set against a rapid expansion of infrastructure needed to support AI, cloud computing and other digital services.

A Pew Research Centre analysis of Data Centre Map information found more than 3,000 operational US data centres and over 1,500 additional facilities in various stages of development earlier in 2026. About 67% of planned facilities were in rural areas, compared with just 13% of existing facilities.

The South and Midwest are expected to absorb much of that expansion. Pew found that three-quarters of planned US data centres were located in those two regions, with the South alone accounting for 48% of proposed development. Virginia, Texas and Georgia led the country for planned facilities.

While no individual European country approaches the US total, Europe has several of the world's largest national data-centre markets.

The UK, Germany and France occupy the next three positions in the July ranking, while Italy, Spain and the Netherlands also appear among the 15 leading countries.

GBC Engineers, a German engineering consultancy involved in data-centre projects, identifies the sector as one of its core business segments, providing structural engineering, permitting and design coordination for hyperscale developments.
