Brazilian jaguar predicts Argentina to win World Cup final
A jaguar at Rio de Janeiro's BioParque has predicted Argentina will defeat Spain in Sunday's FIFA World Cup final, delighting visitors with her pre-match pick on Thursday.
Footage showed Poty choosing between two enrichment boxes marked with the flags of Argentina and Spain. The big cat immediately approached Argentina's box, briefly inspected Spain's before returning to her original choice.
"I think it is a choice that makes a lot of sense," said BioParque biologist Cayo Souza, noting that Poty came from an institution in Foz do Iguacu, close to the Argentine border.
Souza said the prediction reflected the jaguar's curious personality.
"She chose Argentina, but then she took a look at Spain, and went back to Argentina again," he said.
He also predicted a closely contested final, suggesting it could be decided by a late goal or even a penalty shootout. The event attracted families and football fans to BioParque do Rio, while also raising awareness about jaguar conservation.
Argentina will face Spain in the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
