Mali, Niger hail anti-terror gains, pledge stronger Sahel cooperation

Mali's transitional President Assimi Goïta and Niger's President Abdourahamane Tiani have praised progress in their fight against terrorism, pledging stronger security, diplomatic and economic cooperation.

The two leaders met in Niger's capital, Niamey, on Thursday, where Goïta received military honours before holding bilateral talks with Tiani.

Niger's Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré said both leaders expressed satisfaction with the operations of the Alliance of Sahel States' unified military force, citing successes against armed groups.

They also paid tribute to military personnel and civilians killed in the conflict and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The leaders discussed strengthening regional economic integration, including the free movement of people and goods, transport infrastructure, agriculture and the development of energy and mineral resources.
