What we know

  • Albino Gómez a mayoral candidate who had been kidnapped at gunpoint in Mexico on May 26 has been found alive.
  • Gómez is running for mayor on the ticket of the governing Morena party in Cochoapa el Grande in southern Gurrero state.
  • This comes in the lead-up to the Mexican elections which will come off on June 2. Experts fear the upcoming elections could be the most violent in the nation’s history with the possibility of organised crime infiltrating the electoral process.
  • The kidnapping incident happened shortly after Gómez attended his closing campaign rally when gunmen stormed his home and opened fire. Local media reports indicate that the campaign manager of the mayoral candidate was killed and two more injured in the attack.
  • Several candidates have been killed and hundreds have been threatened with those running for local office being the worst affected.

What they said

The mayor of Chilpancingo, a nearby town, sounded the alarm about the kidnapping on social media. She urged authorities to "take the necessary action to safeguard the life of our colleague and those of his team," BBC reports.
