Musk, Nvidia push for more power and chips in US-China AI race
Nvidia chief Jensen Huang and SpaceX founder Elon Musk have called for a major expansion of US chip manufacturing and energy production as America competes with China in artificial intelligence.
Speaking at the Golden Age Summit on Tuesday, Huang said the US needed to build the world's best chips, dramatically increase energy supplies and develop advanced AI algorithms. “That's how we win,” he said following a lunch with President Donald Trump.
Musk identified China as America's biggest competitor, noting that its electricity production is about three times that of the US. He said SpaceX was discussing adding 10 gigawatts of power, while SpaceX and Tesla were targeting annual solar production of 200 gigawatts, including potentially deploying solar power in space.
Huang also described the latest AI data centres as “super intelligence factories”, arguing that unlike traditional data centres that primarily store information, the new facilities produce something of economic value.
The executives also addressed AI safety, with Huang arguing that technological advancement and safety should develop together. Musk said major AI companies had agreed on new safety measures following White House discussions.
