Nepal PM denounces global injustice over climate and war
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah criticised global inequality at the UN General Assembly, saying his country was suffering from climate change and conflicts it had no role in creating.
Addressing world leaders on Thursday, Shah said Nepal had been “hit by the climate we did not warm” and “the wars we did not start”, arguing that global cooperation was failing countries facing humanitarian and environmental crises. He said Nepal’s experience was shared by other countries across South Asia, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Shah also thanked India and China for their assistance after catastrophic flash floods and debris flows struck Nepal in August, killing more than 1,300 people and leaving thousands missing. He said other countries, UN agencies, humanitarian organisations and people around the world had also supported Nepal as the country responded to the disaster.
