WHO intervenes following Cerebrospinal Meningitis outbreak

The World Health Organization (WHO) is assisting with the Cerebrospinal Meningitis outbreak in Yobe State, Nigeria. WHO has deployed experts to support local health authorities and initiated an Incident Management System to address the outbreak. Additionally, WHO has facilitated the provision of vaccines and is collaborating with partners to enhance coordination and access to healthcare services. The outbreak, according to the World Health Organisation has led to 38 deaths and over 1,000 suspected cases in various local government areas.

President’s economic reforms commended

Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has commended the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu, emphasising their potential to increase Nigeria's global standing. According to Nigerian outlet Punch, the First Lady highlighted the significance of revitalising agriculture and empowering the youth. Furthermore, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, Amina Mohammed, expressed the UN's readiness to collaborate with Tinubu's Renewed Hope Initiative, particularly in areas such as women's empowerment and education.

Political protests

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged a protest at the national headquarters of the Labour Party (LP) in Abuja, calling for the resignation of the LP National Chairman. The LP accused the NLC of criminal acts and political bias, while the NLC accused the LP of non-compliance with electoral and constitutional regulations. Legal actions are being considered by the LP in response to the protest, Premium Times reports.

Nigeria wins gold at African Games

Nigeria's 4x100m relay team achieved gold at the African Games in Ghana, clocking a time of 38.41 seconds. Israel Okon, Consider Ekanem, Alaba Akintola, and Usheoritse Itsekiri who made up the team made their country proud with a gold win. They defeated the Ghanaian team which had to settle for second in a time of 38.43 seconds. Esther Elo Joseph also secured silver in the 400m race with a personal best time of 51.64 seconds, according to PM News.

World Happiness ranking

According to the United Nations World Happiness Report, Nigeria is ranked as the 102nd happiest nation globally, with Libya leading in Africa. The report measures happiness using six variables, resulting in Nigeria dropping seven positions from the previous year. Notably, younger Nigerians are reported to be happier, ranking 108th, while older Nigerians are less happy, ranking 130th, Business Day reports.
