Flavio Bolsonaro vows crackdown on organised crime ahead of Brazil run-off

Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro pledged to launch a major crackdown on organised crime if elected, during a campaign meeting with political leaders and supporters in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.

Bolsonaro said he would work alongside Douglas Ruas, the Liberal Party's candidate for Rio de Janeiro governor, to target criminal organisations including Comando Vermelho, Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and militias operating across Brazil.

“We are aligned to declare war, from January next year, on the narco-terrorists of Comando Vermelho, of the PCC, and on the militias,” Bolsonaro said, outlining their proposed security agenda.

The senator also urged supporters to mobilise on the streets and social media ahead of the October 25 presidential run-off, calling on them to counter what he described as misinformation about his campaign.

Beyond security, Bolsonaro proposed vocational training programmes aimed at improving economic opportunities for poorer Brazilians.

The meeting came amid uncertainty over Rio de Janeiro's governorship election. A court ruling concerning annulled votes and a revised tally could potentially allow Ruas to be declared governor-elect without a run-off against rival Eduardo Paes.
