Maduro supporters demand his release nine months after US capture

Venezuelan lawmaker Nicolas Maduro Guerra led a gathering in Caracas on Saturday demanding the release of his father, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, nine months after they were captured by US forces.

Supporters gathered with placards and messages backing Maduro, who remains detained with Flores in Brooklyn, New York.

“We must always raise our voices for the freedom of the president,” Maduro Guerra said, while calling for national unity and support for acting President Delcy Rodriguez. He also maintained that his father and Flores were innocent of the charges against them.

Caracas resident Nancy Landaez said Maduro's supporters continued to await his return. “No one here has forgotten Maduro,” she said. “People are out on the streets for their president and we are waiting for him here.”

Maduro and Flores were captured on January 3 during a US military intervention in Caracas and later transferred to New York, where they face legal proceedings over alleged narco-terrorism offences.
