Peru floods: More than 500 homes devastated in Arequipa after river bursts its banks - Video

More than 500 homes have been severely damaged after the El Chullo river overflowed following heavy rains in the southern Peruvian city of Arequipa.

A preliminary report from the Municipal Government of Arequipa said over 1,500 residents were affected across districts, including Cerro Colorado, Cayma, Cercado and particularly Yanahuara, one of the worst-hit areas. Footage from Friday, February 20, showed streets buried in mud and stones carried by powerful currents, with residents clearing debris from their homes as heavy machinery was deployed to remove sediment that in some properties reached up to one metre high.
