South Africa calls Palestine recognition ‘long overdue’, urges UN members to follow France’s lead: Video

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday, September 22, announced it's decision to formally recognise the state of Palestine.

Speaking during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ramaphosa also lauded the recognition by French President Emmanuel Macron.

"I’d like to congratulate the President of France, President Macron, for today announcing a very bold decision to support the long-overdue creation and the recognition of the sovereign state of Palestine,” Ramaphosa told delegates.

Ramaphosa urged other UN member states to follow France’s lead, stressing that peace depends on universal recognition of both Israel and Palestine.

The wave of recognition comes amid intensifying Israeli military operations in Gaza, which have heightened international calls for a diplomatic breakthrough.
