Missing police firearms

South African national police commissioner Fannie Masemola has revealed that over the past three years, over 1,725 firearms belonging to the South African Police Services (SAPS) have been lost. The police commissioner’s recent revelation comes after an inquiry by the South African parliament in September 2023, local media Cape Time reports. According to Claire Taylor, a researcher for the NGO Gun Free South Africa (GFSA), about 31 people die from gun violence in South Africa. “The easy availability of guns in South Africa has led to an epidemic of gun violence in which 31 people are shot and killed every day in the country,” she is quoted by Cape Times.

Released prisoners

The South African Department of Correctional Services announced that in 2023 over 5,000 prisoners were released on parole and over 2,000 offenders were on probation in Western Cape, a province in the southwestern corner of South Africa. Candice Van-Reenen, a spokesman for correctional services told reporters that as of the first quarter of the 2023–24 fiscal year, the Western Cape had 5,300 parolees and just over 2,300 offenders on probation. This has caused concerns since there aren't enough police officers monitoring parolees, which has made certain communities fearful, Daily Sun reports.

Cholera cases recorded

Department of Health said that the first case was a 43-year-old male patient who tested positive and was subsequently released from the hospital and the second case was a 27-year-old male who travelled to Zimbabwe on December 9, 2023, and returned to South Africa on January 10, 2024. The second patient was admitted to the hospital with a history of vomiting, watery diarrhoea, and stomach cramps that began on January 11, a Department of Health official informed reporters. “His health condition is stable, and he is still in isolation at the hospital. His contacts were identified, and the local outbreak response team has been activated to conduct further investigations and provide health education to contacts,” the official is quoted by The Citizen.
