Uganda translates HIV information into braille and sign language
The Uganda Aids Commission (UAC) has launched translated versions of its national stigma and discrimination guidelines into braille and sign language for citizens with visual and hearing impairments.
UAC director of planning and strategic information, Vincent Bagambe told local media that people with disabilities are exposed to HIV infections and so this initiative allows them to have access to information on HIV.
"We realised that although we are making good progress in the fight against HIV/Aids, the progress is not uniform, there are some people being left behind and unfortunately, people with disabilities are among the groups that are vulnerable to acquiring new HIV infections," Bagambe is quoted by local Ugandan media, the Monitor.
The UAC guidelines on ending stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV were launched in 2021. The guidelines make privacy and confidentiality provisions for people living with HIV.
As of December 2021, an estimated 1.4 million people were living with HIV in Uganda with approximately 200,000 new infections have occurred since the data was last recorded in 2010, according to the UAC.
