Arbaeen march in Tehran blends faith and political support amid renewed US-Iran fighting
Thousands of Iranians marched in Tehran to mark Arbaeen, mixing religious observance with expressions of support for the country’s leadership as fighting with the United States escalates.
Crowds gathered in Imam Hussein Square before moving towards the shrine of Shah Abdol-Azim in Shahr-e Rey, according to footage from the scene. A Tehran resident, Haniyeh Haghpanah, also voiced support for Iran’s leadership, saying she would defend the country regardless of the circumstances. Arbaeen, observed on the twentieth day of Safar, marks 40 days after Ashura and commemorates the killing of Imam Hussein in 680, with this year’s procession taking place amid renewed US-Iran fighting following the collapse of a Pakistan-brokered agreement in June.
