Factbox-Countries with confirmed cases of new mpox strain

Countries outside of Africa are still reporting cases of the clade Ib form of the mpox virus that prompted the World Health Organization to declare the virus a global public health emergency in August.

The outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has spread to neighbouring countries, with Sweden becoming the first country outside of Africa to report a case last year.

The following are the countries with confirmed cases of clade Ib mpox:

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The New York State Department of Health on February 11 confirmed its first case of the new mpox strain, making it the fourth known case in the country. The others were reported in California, Georgia and New Hampshire, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

GERMANY

The first case of the new mpox variant has been detected in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for public health said on October 22, adding that it viewed the risk to the wider population as low.

As of 24 January, 2025, Germany had reported 7 cases of the new strain of mpox. All the cases were due to recent travel history to East Africa, according to the WHO.

UNITED KINGDOM

Britain's health security agency (UKHSA) said on January 31 another case of the new mpox variant clade Ib had been detected in England, the eighth case confirmed in the country in recent weeks.

The government agency said the risk to the population remained low.

The new case was detected in London in a patient who had recently returned from Uganda, which is seeing community transmission of the variant - had no links to the previous cases identified in England.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

Two strains of mpox are spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo - the endemic clade I and the new clade Ib, which spreads more easily through close contact, including sexual.

DRC has seen a total of 14,530 cases and 43 deaths as of January 19, 2025, according to WHO data.

SWEDEN

Global health officials on August 15 confirmed an infection with a new strain of the mpox virus in Sweden, the first sign of its spread outside the African continent.

Swedish health officials said at a press conference that the person was infected while in Africa with the clade Ib type of mpox involved in the recent outbreak. The person is receiving treatment.

THAILAND

A mpox case reported in Thailand was confirmed to be of the clade Ib strain of the virus, the first in the country, a disease control official said on Aug. 22.

In January of 2025, the country reported two more cases of clade Ib mpox in patients who had a history of travel to the United Arab Emirates, according to the WHO.

INDIA

India said on September 23 that an mpox case involving a traveller in the southern state of Kerala was from the fast-spreading clade 1b variety, marking the country's first recorded case from the new strain.

The patient is a 38-year-old man who had travelled from the United Arab Emirates, Kerala authorities had said.

BURUNDI

As of 24 January, 2025, Burundi recorded 3116 cases of mpox, with one death. In July, the country's outbreak was declared to be driven by the clade Ib strain, the WHO said.

KENYA

As of 24 January, 2025, Kenya has confirmed 36 cases of mpox with one death, according to WHO data.

RWANDA

As of 24 January, 2025, 82 clade Ib mpox cases and zero deaths had cumulatively been reported by the country, according to WHO data.

UGANDA

As of 24 January, 2025, Uganda has identified 2031 cases of clade Ib mpox, with 10 deaths, according to WHO data.

ZAMBIA

On October 10, the country reported its first case of mpox, The WHO said sequencing had identified the case as clade Ib.

As of 24 January, 2025, the country had a total of three cases of clade Ib mpox.

CHINA

As of 24 January, 2025, China had reported seven cases of clade Ib mpox, according to WHO data.

China's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said on January 9, that it had found a cluster outbreak of the Ib subclade that started with the infection a foreigner who has a history of travel and residence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BELGIUM

As of 24 January, 2025, Belgium had reported two cases of the new mpox strain, one case with history of travel to Central Africa and one subsequent case among family contacts, according to the WHO.

ZIMBABWE

As of 24 January, 2025, the country had reported one case of the new mpox strain.

CANADA

As of 24 January, 2025 the country reported one case of clade Ib mpox, linked to history of travel to East Africa.
