Protests erupt on Spanish Island over virus-hit cruise ship: Video

People fear a potential health crisis as a vessel linked to a deadly hantavirus outbreak approaches.

Residents and dock workers in Tenerife, part of Spain, gathered at the port to protest the expected arrival of the MV Hondius following a deadly hantavirus outbreak on board. Demonstrators warned of a possible wider health crisis, with some drawing comparisons to the COVID-19 pandemic and expressing concern over potential lockdowns. Protesters also criticised authorities for allowing the ship to dock, citing fears that local hospitals are already under pressure and may struggle to cope with additional cases. The vessel, carrying 150 people, had previously been held off Cape Verde after disembarkation was refused, before Spain authorised its arrival for quarantine and further checks. According to the World Health Organization, three cases have been confirmed, with five suspected and three deaths reported.
